Timely hitting has been the key to the Chicago Cubs recent success and they came through again on Saturday with a 9-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals and look to sweep their bitter rivals on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Chicago is hitting .362 with runners in scoring position in its last six games after batting .163 in such situations over the previous 25 games. Javier Baez, who has a major league-leading nine opposite field home runs this season, has four dingers and 11 RBIs in his last seven home games after driving in two Saturday. The Cardinals got a three-run homer from Marcell Ozuna – his 17th – in a four-run top of the first inning Saturday, but starter Jack Flaherty couldn’t get out of the fourth inning and gave the lead up to drop the Cards 4.5 games behind first place Chicago and Milwaukee. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is batting .304 in 102 career at-bats at Wrigley Field but is 3-for-19 this season.

Wainwright, who is 16-11 with a 4.02 ERA in 47 games versus the Cubs, allowed a season-high six runs across five innings of a 13-5 loss at Wrigley Field on May 5th.

Kyle Hendricks has been on a good roll lately and that includes a four-hit shutout over the Cardinals on May 3rd, starting a run of Chicago winning six of his last seven starts. Hendricks struck out 10 Colorado Rockies in a 6-3 win Tuesday and has 26 Ks in 21 innings over his last three outings. Lifetime, Hendricks is 6-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 15 starts versus the Cardinals.
We predicted the home team would win on Saturday and the streak will continue on Sunday Night Baseball. Hendricks has been outstanding and I still consider him one of the more underrated pitchers in the majors. Wainwright was solid against the Cubs last week at Busch, but was rocked in his outing at Wrigley earlier this year.
