The San Diego Padres put on a hitting clinic this past weekend in Colorado – but unfortunately – so did the Rockies. The teams combined for 92 runs in splitting the four games, the most scored in a four-game series since 1929, and the Padres will now come home to pitcher-friendly Petco Park to start a three-game set with the Milwaukee Brewers. San Diego salvaged the split Sunday’s 14-13 triumph in which pitcher Matt Strahm drew a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to snap a tie. The Padres entered the ninth trailing 13-10 and made an even bigger comeback in Friday’s contest, scoring six in the ninth and five in the 10th to win 16-12. Hunter Renfroe mashed five home runs in the series including two yesterday for a San Diego outfield that leads the majors with 52 dingers. Greg Garcia finished with four hits and four RBI Sunday to help even the Padres road record at 17-17. Milwaukee’s offense is also on a roll, averaging 5.8 runs over its last 21 games, but they are just 12-9 in that stretch and own a one-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants with Sunday’s 5-3 victory and will wrap-up their eight-game road trip with these three in San Diego. Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich is batting .472 with five homers during 13-game hitting streak and recording two doubles on Sunday.
Pitchers: Brewers – Jhoulys Chacin (3-7, 5.74 ERA) | Padres – Joey Lucchesi (5-4, 4.11)
Jhoulys Chacin will make his first start this month after missing some time with a lower back strain and the Brewers are hoping June goes better than May did for the righty. Chacin has lost his last four decisions including his last start when the Pittsburgh Pirates tagged him for a season-high seven runs in 2.2 innings. Chacin, who is 1-6 with a 7.39 ERA in seven road starts, is 7-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 16 career appearances (12 starts) against the Padres – mostly with Colorado.

The Padres have won three of Joey Lucchesi’s last four starts, but were unable to give him enough run support in his latest outing. Lucchesi suffered his fourth defeat at San Francisco last Wednesday when he allowed three runs – two earned – and six strikeouts in six innings. The young lefty has a 3.11 ERA in eight home starts while limiting opponents to a .202 batting average. His only career start against the Brewers came last March when he surrendered three runs in 4.2 innings.
The Padres aren’t going to score like they did this weekend, but they will get enough to back Lucchesi here, who has been pretty good at home. Chacin has been dreadful on the road and he’s making his first start in a couple of weeks after a lower back injury. Milwaukee is just an average team on the road and San Diego is 7-3 in game one of a series when coming off a win.
