The battle for the National League Central is coming down to three teams and two of them meet Monday night in St. Louis to open a key series. The Cardinals will host the Milwaukee Brewers for the first of three, then turn around to play three more in Miller Park starting next Monday. The week will begin with St. Louis and the Cubs tied atop the division with Milwaukee two games back and Chicago playing host to San Francisco starting Tuesday. The Brewers are going to need to get some innings out of Monday’s starter Zach Davies after the bullpen got smoked in Washington over the weekend. Davies is coming off the injured list and might not be able to eat up a ton of innings right away. The Brewers staff allowed 30 runs and 37 hits with 14 walks in splitting the final two games of their series with the Nationals. Milwaukee came out on top of a wild 15-14, 14-inning affair on Saturday before falling 16-8 on Sunday. The Cardinals wrapped-up a 4-2 road trip with a 5-4 at Cincinnati on Sunday as Paul Goldschmidt continues to swing a hot bat. The first baseman belted a two-run homer Sunday and is 5-for-11 with two dingers and two doubles over his last three games.
Pitchers: Brewers – Zach Davies (8-5, 3.74 ERA) | Cardinals – Dakota Hudson (11-6, 3.82)
Davies lost his last three starts prior to hitting the IL with back spasms and recorded an 11.77 ERA in that stretch that included back-to-back losses to the Cubs. He had allowed three runs total in his previous four starts and owns a 2.97 road ERA this season. Davies is 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA lifetime versus St. Louis including a 4-3 loss back in April.

Hudson is coming off a terrific outing – albeit against Kansas City – when he tossed six shutout innings in the Cardinals’ 6-0 win on Wednesday. He recorded a 7.71 ERA over his previous three outings while giving up 19 hits and seven walks in just 11.2 innings. St. Louis has lost both of his starts against Milwaukee this season and Davies allowed five home runs total in those two outings.
The Brewers have been scoring a lot of runs lately, and their pitching is allowing a bunch as well. I’m not expecting much out of Davies tonight and I’m sure Milwaukee can get to Hudson just like they did earlier this season. Take the over.
