Opening Odds: Atlanta -110
The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are two teams who will be battling the rest of the National League East this season and they will be showcased on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball this week. The opening series has been very tight so far with the Mets taking a 1-0 victory on Friday and Atlanta returned the favor in dramatic fashion Saturday. Marcell Ozuna was signed in the offseason and made his new teammates very happy on Saturday with a two-strike, two-out, game-tying homer in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 5-3 victory. The Braves scored only one run on seven hits in the first 17.2 innings of the series before Ozuna’s homer. Atlanta then took full advantage of baseball’s new rule of starting extra innings with a runner at second, bringing home three runs in the 10th. New York’s Michael Conforto went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while shortstop Amed Rosario finished 2-for-4 with a game-tying RBI triple in the fifth. Mets pitchers have struck out 27 Atlanta hitters through the first two games.
Pitchers: Braves – Sean Newcomb (6-3, 3.16 ERA) | Mets – Rick Porcello (14-12, 5.52)
Sean Newcomb had decent results in his first two seasons as a starting pitcher, but worked mostly out of the bullpen in 2019 after struggling in the rotation. Newcomb had a 3.04 ERA as a reliever last season and walked only 19 batters while striking out 57 in 53.1 innings. In seven career starts against the Mets, Newcomb owns a 2.75 ERA.
Porcello is hoping the switch to the National League will turn things around for the righty who was awful in 2019. He made 32 starts for Boston and posted a 6.04 ERA with a .291 opponents batting average in his final 22 starts. Porcello, who pitched the first 11 years of his career in the American League, is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career starts against Atlanta.
I’m taking the Braves here. They couldn’t hit anything until Ozuna sparked the team with his dramatic homer in the ninth yesterday. I’m not going to trust Porcello until he can show me he’s turned things around after an awful 2019. Look for the Braves to hit him hard.
