Joe Girardi guided the New York Yankees to a World Series title in 2009 and will see plenty of familiar faces in the other dugout this week. Girardi is now the head man in Philadelphia and will look to manage the Phillies out of an early funk when they host the Yankees in the first of a two-city, four-game series. New York already took two of three to start the season from another NL East team when Gleyber Torres highlighted a three-hit performance with a home run in the seventh inning and a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth to rally the Yanks to a 3-2 victory over Washington on Sunday. Former Yankee Didi Gregorius played the last five seasons in New York but signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Phillies in the offseason. The shortstop belted solo homers in each of the first two games before adding his fourth hit of the season Sunday, although Philadelphia lost to Miami for the second time in three days. Giancarlo Stanton, who went deep in the Yankees’ first two contests, has struggled against Monday starter Jake Arrieta (3-for-14 with three strikeouts). Philadelphia slugger Bryce Harper, who smacked his first homer of the season on Sunday, is 7-for-39 with 13 strikeouts in his career versus New York.

Pitchers: Yankees – J.A. Happ (12-8, 4.91 ERA) | Phillies – Jake Arrieta (8-8, 4.64)

Another familiar face will take the mound for New York, J.A. Happ sent the first four years with the Phillies and was even on the team when they lost to the Yankees in the 2009 World Series. Happ was inconsistent in 2019 and allowed a career-high 34 long balls, but he’s been terrific against his former team. He is 5-0 with a 1.45 ERA against the Phillies lifetime.

Jake Arrieta’s 2019 season was cut short after undergoing surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow and will begin his third season in Philadelphia. The veteran righty surrendered 21 homers in 24 starts a year ago and is 3-2 with a 3.98 ERA in nine career appearances (eight starts) versus the Yankees.

The Phillies pitching was pretty bad in two losses versus Miami over the weekend and I don’t have much confidence in Arrieta anymore. His ERA and control have been getting worse each season as he approaches 40 years old. The Yankees lineup is going to love hitting in this ballpark the next two days because the ball has been carrying. Happ isn’t the best, but he has terrific numbers against the Phillies.
