Braves vs Mets Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [6/29/19]

Atlanta (49-34) at NY Mets (37-46)
When: Saturday, June 29th, 2019
Where: Citi Field,
New York, NY
Time: 4:10 ET | TV: FS South, SNY
Opening Odds: New York -117/9

The season continues to spiral out of control for the New York Mets and not even their ace can stop the losing skid. Jacob deGrom allowed three runs over six innings while the bullpen surrendered another three in the 6-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Friday to open-up their three-game series at Citi Field. It was the season-worst sixth loss in a row for the Mets, who fell 12 games behind Atlanta in the NL East. Despite all the losing and the rough season, Pete Alonso continues to be the bright spot, as the rookie belted his 28th home run to tie Mark McGwire for the most by a first year player before July 1st. Alonso also accepted an invitation to compete in this year’s Home Run Derby during the All-Star Break. Speaking of All-Stars, Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman reached base four times on Friday and has multiple hits in nine of his last 16 games as the Braves increased their lead over second place Philadelphia to 5.5 games. Johan Camargo delivered a three-run double, while rookie Austin Riley mashed his 13th homer to give Atlanta their 16th win in 21 games. New York’s Steven Matz hopes to end the team’s losing streak when he goes up against Julio Teheran.

Pitchers: Braves – Julio Teheran (5-6, 3.94 ERA) | Mets – Steven Matz (5-6, 4.85)

Teheran looks to get back on track after two horrible outings that included a loss to the Mets on June 18th. In that game, Teheran allowed six runs over four innings and allowed seven runs and nine hits most recently against the Chicago Cubs. He was unbeaten in his previous eight starts and never allowed more than three runs in any of those outings. Teheran did have a solid start back in April against the Mets when he allowed one run over six innings.

Matz has not been much better than Teheran lately and the Mets have lost four of his last five starts. He gave up seven runs and 10 hits over 4.1 innings at Philadelphia last time out and five runs over five innings in a loss to the Braves on June 19th. Matz has been much better at home, posting a 3-0 mark and 2.25 ERA and New York is 5-1 in his six home starts. Matz beat the Braves with six innings of two-run ball in April while striking out eight.

Let’s see. I’m getting the first place Braves, who are on a 16-5 run, at almost even money against a Mets squad who can’t do anything right. Yes, please, give me Atlanta. Teheran has been shaky lately, but he’s done enough good this season to warrant another chance.
