After easy Week 1 tuneups, the Auburn Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs kickoff SEC play in Starkville, Mississippi. Both teams are coming off back-to-back losing Conference going 3-5 last year and 2-6 in 2008. Auburn is poised to make a run this year in the SEC with 2nd year Head Coach Gene Chizik.
Last week the Tigers breezed by Arkansas State 52-26 by compiling 608 yards of total offense. Auburn’s secondary did not look good, however as Arkansas State passed for 323 yards. The Bulldogs looked more impressive in their 49-7 win over Memphis out gaining the Tigers 569-237. Quarterbacks Tyler Russell and Chris Relf combined for 20-25 passing, 372 yards, and 5 touchdowns while 3 receivers gained over 90 yards.
Auburn has more talent than the Bulldogs, but winning on the road in the SEC is very tough. The Tigers are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games and 5-11 ATS in their last 16 SEC games overall. However, Auburn has dominated the series lately by covering as the favorite in 6 of the last 8 meetings.
I’m expecting more offense then the 3-2 Auburn win in Starkville 2 years ago. Based on Auburn’s recent road struggles and how impressive the Bulldogs looked at home last week, I’m leaning on Mississippi State tonight.
Pick: Mississippi State +1.5
