The New York Yankees had one of their better seasons in recent years, but it only go them as far as a date with the upstart Oakland Athletics in a one-game Wild Card game at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. The Boston Red Sox ran away with the AL East leaving the Yankees to play in their second-straight AL Wild Card game after beating Minnesota in last year’s edition, then running all the way to Game 7 of the ALCS. Luis Severino, who started last year’s game, will take the mound this time against the Oakland bullpen, starting with Liam Hendriks. “Part of potentially doing it this way is you’re going to have to make some adjustments on the fly,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin told reporters. “You can look at it and draw it out how you think it’s going to go. Very rarely does it go exactly the way you think.” New York set a record for most home runs during the regular season (267) in 2018 despite being without slugger Aaron Judge for 50 games. The Yankees lineup is stacked, but the A’s lineup isn’t too shabby either. Oakland smashed 227 home runs (3rd) led by designated hitter Khris Davis’s MLB-leading 48 while batting .247 for the fourth consecutive season. The A’s had five players hit 23 or more home runs including a career-best 27 from outfielder Stephen Piscotty. Oakland, which went 3-3 against New York during the regular season, is in the playoffs for the first time since losing the wild card game 9-8 in 12 innings to the Kansas City Royals in 2014.
Pitchers: Athletics – Liam Hendricks (0-1, 4.13 ERA) | Yankees – Luis Severino (19-8, 3.39)
Hendricks made eight of his 25 appearances as a starter and posted a 2.08 ERA in 8.2 innings in that role. Oakland will carry 11 pitchers on the roster for this game and may use All-Star closer Blake Treinen (9-2, 0.78 ERA, 38 saves) for multiple innings. Hendriks started a September 4th game against the Yankees at home, pitching a clean inning with one strikeout.
Severino is hoping for a better showing than he had against the Twins in last year’s wild card game, when he surrendered a pair of home runs and was charged with three runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Severino was tagged for six runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk in 2.2 innings at Oakland on September 5th, but allowed just three earned runs total over his last three starts of 2018.
This Oakland bullpen is really good, but the Yankees have the second best home record in all of baseball and scored seven runs or more in five of their last six regular season games. I can see Severino pitching much better this time around and keeping the inexperienced Oakland bats at bay.
