Oakland (94-62) at LA Angels (70-86)
When: Tuesday, September 24, 2019
Where: Angel Stadium,
Anaheim, CA
Time: 10:07 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: Oakland -190/9.5
The Oakland A’s have been climbing the standings all season and are finally at the top of the wild card race in the American League as we head into the final week of the 2019 campaign. The August and September schedule was supposed to be tougher than fellow wild card-contenders Tampa Bay and Cleveland, but the A’s flourished and find themselves 1.5 games clear of Tampa Bay for the top spot and the homefield advantage in the one-game playoff next week against either the Rays or Indians. The Athletics saw their four-game winning streak snapped in Sunday’s 8-3 loss to Texas, but ended the season 52-27 at Oakland Coliseum and will play their remaining six games against the L.A. Angels and Seattle Mariners on the road. Oakland has won 15-of-19 overall and would like to wrap things up over the next couple of days in order to set the pitching for next week. The Angels have dropped four series in a row and 14-of-19 overall after Sunday’s 13-5 loss at Houston and will have to wait until next season to see Mike Trout again (thumb surgery). The Angels will try and play spoiler with the A’s and later this week against the Astros, who are still vying for the best record in the American League.
Pitchers: Athletics – Homer Bailey (13-8, 4.55 ERA) | Angels – Dillon Peters (3-3, 4.81)
Bailey had a bit of a rocky start with the A’s when he came over at the trade deadline from Kansas City, but has settled in nicely of late. He limited his former Royals’ teammates to three hits over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision Wednesday – a game Oakland won 1-0. He is 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA over his last seven starts after an 8.25 ERA in his first five outings with Oakland. Bailey allowed four runs and six hits over six innings against the Angels back on April 28th.
Peters is trying to earn himself a spot on the 2020 rotation, but is not faring well lately, surrendering a lot of home runs and is winless in his last six appearances. He allowed two runs and five hits over four innings in the Angels’ 3-2 win at the New York Yankees on Wednesday but didn’t pitch long enough to earn the victory. Peters has served-up seven longs balls in his last six outings while completing five innings just once in that span.
Bailey has been pitching great and without Trout in the lineup, this Angels’ team just can’t score enough runs to help the total. Oakland should win this game, but it’s a lot to lay on the road, so I’ll take the under.
