The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels don’t really have a realistic chance of catching the Houston Astros in the American League West, but both are setting their sites on getting back above .500 and competing for a wild card spot. The two will open a three-game series in Anaheim Tuesday night as Frankie Montas opposes the Angels’ Griffin Canning. While the A’s had an off day Monday, the Angels had to wrap-up an eight-game road trip with a makeup date in Chicago against the Cubs. It didn’t go well. L.A. managed just four hits in the 8-1 setback to end the trip at 5-3. The trek started in Oakland where the Angels scored 23 runs in taking two of three from the A’s and have won seven of their last 10 against AL West opponents. The Angels scored five or more runs in six of the eight games during the road trip to boost their season average to 5.02 runs per contest. Oakland has been streaky lately and are currently in a five-game tailspin after running off 10 wins in a row – pending a suspended game on May 19 that could increase it to 11 – after a 12-inning loss against the first place Astros that dropped them under .500. Matt Chapman and Ramon Laureano are carrying hot bats with the latter batting .344 during his career-high 15-game hitting streak and has reached base in 22 straight contests – both being the longest active streaks in the majors. Chapman is hitting .321 with six homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs over his last 12 games after collecting three hits Sunday. The A’s hold a slight 4-3 edge in the season series thus far in 2019.
Pitchers: Athletics – Frankie Montas (6-2, 2.81 ERA) | Angels – Griffin Canning (2-1, 3.06)
Montas is coming off his shortest outing of the season when he lasted just four innings while allowing four runs, five hits, and five walks in a 6-4 loss versus the Angels last week. He also faced the Angels in his first start of the season on March 31st and it one of his better ones all season. Montas pitched six innings and allowed just three hits and a run. On the season, he is 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA in six road starts.

Canning has been getting stronger with each start in his rookie season after a rough first three starts in which he allowed nine earned runs in 14.1 innings. His last three have been solid with two runs total allowed in 18 innings including a six-inning, one-run outing against Oakland last week. The Angels won that game 12-7 but Canning came away with a no-decision. He is 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three home starts.
The Angels’ offense is clicking right now and they were able to get to Montas just a week ago in Oakland. Canning is only two years removed from being drafted in the second round and he’s starting to pitch like a first-rounder. I’ll take the home team here.
