The Houston Astros recent woes have allowed the Texas Rangers to gain some ground in what was once thought to be an insurmountable lead in the American League West. The Astros dropped nine of 11 before getting back on track over the weekend and sweeping a three-game set from the lowly Seattle Mariners. Next up will be a brief two-game interleague set at the pitching-challenged Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies starting on Tuesday. With all the slugging young talent around the majors this season, people tend to forget how incredible Astros left fielder Yordan Alvarez has been. The rookie has seven home runs and 21 RBI in his first 16 career games, and returned Sunday after missing two games with a knee injury, while going 2-for-3 with three RBI as the DH. Unfortunately, we may not get to see him much in the next two games in a National League park. Colorado, who scored 31 runs in splitting four games with the first place L.A. Dodgers this weekend, will get to face a Houston hurler making his major league debut in Jose Urquidy. The Rockies snapped a 12-game slide versus Los Angeles during the series while remaining tied with Philadelphia for the second NL Wild Card spot. Rockies shortstop – and All-Star – Trevor Story (17 home runs, 48 RBI) could return to the lineup after missing 11 games with a thumb injury, while first-time All-Star David Dahl has five home runs and 15 RBI in his last eight games.
Pitchers: Astros – Jose Urquidy (MLB Debut) | Rockies – German Marquez (8-3, 4.29)
How thoughtful of Houston to throw Urquidy into Coors Field to make his debut, knowing that the Rockies have scored 96 runs there in their last 11 games. Urquidy was the opening day starter at Corpus Christi before getting promoted after making seven appearances (six starts) in Double A. He went 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA in eight games (seven starts) with Triple-A Round Rock, striking out 64 in 43.2 innings.

German Marquez has been much better on the road this season, but does have a 4-1 mark at home despite a 5.70 ERA and the Rockies are 8-1 in his nine home starts this season. Marquez earned his eighth win last time out by allowing three runs (two earned) and seven hits in five innings of a 6-3 victory at San Francisco on Wednesday. He did allow 11 runs in 11.2 innings over his previous two starts at Coors Field, including a 14-8 victory over San Diego. Marquez has made one start in his career against Houston and earned the 5-1 win in 2018, allowing one run and three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
I know Marquez has been shaky at home this season, but the Rockies are 8-1 in his starts at Coors and making your major league debut in this park will be awfully tough for Urquidy. I’ll take Colorado in the opener.
