The Arizona State Sun Devils have enjoyed early-season success at home and during neutral site games, but they had their first ‘true’ road game on Saturday and came out with a hard-fought 76-74 at Georgia. They took the short trip up to Nashville and will play the Vanderbilt Commodores on one-day rest, while the home team has been off for 12 days for final exams. The Sun Devils erased an 18-point deficit to beat Georgia on Saturday with sophomore guard Remy Martin leading the way with 21 points while sophomore forward Romello White added 16. The Sun Devils bounced back from their only loss of the season – 72-66 to highly-ranked Nevada – by forcing 19 turnovers and holding Georgia to nine field goals in the second half. Leading scorer Luguentz Dort was just 2-of-10 from the field and finished with 12 points, well below his season average of 20.9. Vandy is dealing without star point guard Darius Garland, who had season-ending knee injury on Nov. 23. The Commodores have traded wins and losses over the last five games, but did manage to beat a Pac-12 opponent in Los Angeles last month – an 82-78 at USC.

Martin’s big game against Georgia was a big bounce back for him after going 1-of-10 against Nevada, and also had a season-high eight rebounds in the win over the Bulldogs. The Sun Devils are big up front, thus have a big advantage on the glass (+11.5 rebounding margin) led by senior De’Quon Lake and San Diego State transfer Zylan Cheathan, who is averaging 12.2 points and 9.7 rebounds. Arizona State is 4-0 lifetime against the Commodores, including 76-64 in Tempe a year ago to the day.

Simi Shittu has led the offense in Garland’s absence, averaging 15.9 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 56.3 percent from the field overall. The 6’10” freshman had 15 points in a 79-51 win over Middle Tennessee on December 5th while Syracuse transfer Matthew Moyer made his first start of the season and added 14 points. Senior Joe Toye has scored in double figures in five games for a Commodores team that averages 83.9 points a game.

Arizona State’s inside game is going to prove too much for Vanderbilt to handle. They outrebound their opponents by 15 a game which will force Vandy outside. The Commodores do not shoot the 3 well, and Garland was their most prolific shooter. Chalk up another big win for the Sun Devils.
