The Boston Red Sox are tuning up for their big weekend series with the New York Yankees by continuing to dominate the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox took the opener of a three-game set by homering four times in a 9-1 triumph and can go for the series win on Wednesday when Rick Porcello goes up against lefty Andrew Heaney. J.D. Martinez and Jackie Bradley, Jr. belted two of the home runs Tuesday, with Martinez improving to 11-for-22 with two homers, six RBIs and eight runs scored during his five-game hitting streak. Martinez has also been a big part of how the Red Sox have dominated the season series thus far by going 10-for-17 with two homers against Los Angeles. Boston has outscored (36-4) and out-hit (57-19) the Angels in winning the first four contests of 2018 after the Angels took the 2017 series 4-2. While Boston has won four of five to remain right behind the Yankees in the AL East, Los Angeles has lost four in a row and 11 of 15 to fall 11.5 games behind Houston in the AL West and eight games out of a Wild Card. Superstar Mike Trout is 20-for-44 in his last 13 games and has reached base safely in 16 of 17 career games at Fenway Park. Second baseman Ian Kinsler has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games versus Boston after going 2-for-4 on Tuesday.
Pitchers: Angels – Andrew Heaney (4-5, 3.43 ERA) | Red Sox – Rick Porcello (9-3, 3.44)
Heaney has some pretty severe splits this season when it comes to home and road games, going 4-1 with an 0.88 ERA in his last six starts at Angel Stadium and 0-3 with a 5.13 ERA in six road starts this season. Heaney allowed one run in seven innings of a 2-1 triumph versus Toronto at home last time out. He has made one career appearance against Boston, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings of a 7-3 victory three years ago.
Porcello is also coming off a strong outing, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings in a 9-2 victory at Minnesota on Thursday. Porcello was on the winning end of his last meeting with the Angels back in April, scattering six hits and striking out six over six innings in a 9-0 rout. That win improved Porcello to 7-7 in his career against Los Angeles.
I would like to say the Angels are good dog pick here, but they just aren’t playing well right now and the Red Sox own this team. Porcello may not be having the Cy Young season he had two years ago, but he’s still pretty good. This should be another easy win for Boston.
