Yankees vs Phillies Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [6/26/18]

NY Yankees (51-25) at Philadelphia (41-35)
When: Tuesday, June 26th 2018
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: YES, NBCS Philly
Opening Odds: New York -195/7.5

Its no secret that the weakest part of the New York Yankees is their starting staff and are shopping for a top-line pitcher in order to compete with the Boston Red Sox for the division title. The Bronx Bombers got a huge lift from the youngest arm in their rotation Monday as Jonathan Loaisiga shut down the Philadelphia Phillies for five innings as the Yankees took the opener of a three-game interleague series 4-2. Closer Aroldis Chapman surrendered a run for the first time since May 30th, but still recorded his 23rd save as New York moved a half-game ahead of Boston in the American League East. The Yankees were swept over the weekend by Tampa Bay on the heels of sweeping the Seattle Mariners and will try and get rolling again against a Phillies team battling Atlanta and Washington in the NL East. Monday’s outing was the first time in nine games that Philadelphia had been held to less than four runs. The Yankees will turn to their ace Luis Severino in the second game opposite former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta.

Pitchers: Yankees – Luis Severino (11-2, 2.24 ERA) | Phillies – Jake Arrieta (5-5, 3.42)

Severino wasn’t his sharpest last time out, but managed to record his 11th win in a 4-3 victory over the Mariners after allowing eight hits and three runs in 5.2 innings last Thursday. He’s allowed only six home runs on the season, but four of them have come in his last six outings, but is still on pace for a Cy Young-type season with 123 strikeouts in 104.2 innings. This will be Severino’s first career start against Philadelphia.

Arrieta has a sparkling May with a 0.90 ERA in five starts, but June has been a completely different story. The former Cy Young winner is 0-3 in four outings with an ERA of 7.13 and has surrendered a home run in each of those outings (five total). Arrieta has been better at home (2.08 ERA) than the road (5.05 ERA) and will be making his first start in six years against New York when he was with the Orioles.

The Phillies have a lineup that will be pretty good in a year or two, but young lineups tend to struggle when seeing a pitcher for the first time. Take last night for example. They were shut down by a rookie and now they’ll see who is arguably one of the best aces in the game right now. I also don’t see Arrieta turning things around against this New York lineup.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 -123
