The Texas Rangers have been taking advantage of the slumping Houston Astros to inch closer to them in the American League West standings and will look to put some distance between themselves and the L.A. Angels starting on Monday. The teams will open a four-game series with the Rangers holding on to the second AL Wild Card spot by a half-game over Cleveland and Oakland. Texas is also only 6.5 games behind the Astros despite losing their first series since late May when they dropped two of three at Tampa Bay over the weekend. Shortstop comes into July with an eight-game hitting streak, while Joey Gallo is 6-for-13 with three homers in the last four games. DH Hunter Pence, who was selected to start the All-Star game next week, is expected back for the Rangers on Monday and sitting out the past few games with a groin injury. Los Angeles followed up a four-game winning streak by losing the last three games against Oakland at home by a combined score of 23-5 to fall back under .500 once again. Newly minted All-Star Tommy La Stella had three hits in Sunday’s 12-3 loss while teammate Shohei Ohtani homered twice and is a sizzling 11-for-23 over his past seven games. The teams have split 10 games this season with the Rangers winning all three at home by a combined 22-11.

The Angels are expected to call up rookie left-hander Jose Suarez to make his fifth start of the season and first since June 20th, when he allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings at Toronto. He was a little better in his previous outing on June 15th, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings to earn the win at Tampa Bay. Suarez is 2-0 with a 6.06 ERA in three starts on the road with Los Angeles.

Mike Minor could be in the running for AL June Pitcher of the Month after going 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA in five outings. The Rangers have won each of his last five starts, including a complete-game victory Wednesday when he allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts at Detroit. Minor, who has not allowed more than three runs in his last 12 trips to the mound, is 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) against the Angels.
I really like the Rangers in this one, not only because Minor has been so good, but Texas is one of the best home teams in the majors, boasting a 28-15 mark in Arlington. The Rangers’ bats were held in check this weekend, but they’ll bust out against Suarez.
