LA Angels (26-21) at Toronto (22-25)
When: Tuesday, May 22nd 2018
Where: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: FS West, Sportsnet
Opening Odds: Toronto -107/8.5
The Los Angeles Angels will seek to reclaim their winning ways when they hit the road for a 10-game road trip that begins with the first of three against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre. The Angels have enjoyed success away from home this season, going an MLB-best 14-4, but are just five games above .500 thanks to their poor play at home. Los Angeles concluded a disappointing 11-game homestand with just four wins, including Sunday’s 5-2 victory over Tampa Bay that ended a streak of five straight losses. Mike Trout answered an 0-for-15 drought with three hits – including two homers – three RBIs and four runs scored in his last three games and is 5-for-14 with six RBIs against Tuesday starter J.A. Happ. The Blue Jays are having similar issues while playing at home and committed four errors on Sunday and were outscored 27-12 en route to dropping all four games to the Oakland Athletics to begin their seven-game homestand. The pitching has been bad, but Toronto would like to see Josh Donaldson get going again after the third baseman went 0-for-13 in the four games versus Oakland. Los Angeles outfielder Kole Calhoun is 2-for-21 in his last eight games to drop his batting average to a career-worst .161.
Pitchers: Angels – Garrett Richards (4-2, 3.47 ERA) | Blue Jays – J.A. Happ (5-3, 4.15)
Garrett Richards is coming off a terrific outing, but was saddled with the loss when he was outdueled by Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros 2-0 on Wednesday to fall to 1-2 in his last four outings despite allowing just two unearned runs on four hits over seven innings in that contest. Richards allowed a home run for the second straight game after not surrendering one in four of his previous five. He has had his issues with Curtis Granderson in the past (4-for-6 with three homers), but has owned first baseman Justin Smoak (2-for-19, six strikeouts) and former Angel Kendrys Morales (2-for-18, five strikeouts).
J.A. Happ is hoping to carry the momentum over from his previous start when he struck-out 10 New York Mets, while allowing just two hits in seven solid innings of a 12-1 route. Happ was hit hard before that, however, getting shelled for seven runs in a 9-3 loss to Seattle on May 10th. He has not had very good success in his career against the Angels, posting a 1-6 mark and 6.17 ERA in seven career appearances.
Both teams are slumping a bit lately, but the Angels, as I mentioned, are terrific on the road and simply a better team top to bottom than Toronto. Happ has been very inconsistent and is awful against the Angels. I like the road team here.
Pick: Angels -105
