Way back in the offseason, the NBA scheduled their Saturday night ABC games in hopes of garnering the most viewers each week. This Saturday’s matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors looked like a good one. But fast-forward to today, and both teams are having trouble keeping their stars on the court. The Warriors have been destroyed by injuries and have the worst record in the league – although they at least have Steph Curry back now. Philadelphia is unbeatable at home but horrible on the road and are without stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Curry played for the first time Thursday since suffering a broken hand on Oct. 30 and scored a team-high 23 points on 6-of-16 shooting in 27 minutes. Golden State dropped a 121-113 decision to Toronto to push its NBA-worst record to 14-49. Philadelphia is attempting to win back-to-back road games for the first time in over six weeks after a 125-108 win at Sacramento on Thursday to improve to 10-23 away from Wells Fargo Center. Golden State has won 12 of the past 15 in the series but lost in Philadelphia on Jan. 28, 115-104. Embiid led Philadelphia with 24 points, but he will sit out again Saturday. Simmons had 17 points and five assists in the first meeting. D’Angelo Russell led the Warriors with 28 points, but he has since been traded to Minnesota in a deal that netted the Warriors former No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins. Golden State and Philly also made a deal around the deadline, with the Warriors sending guards Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III to Philadelphia in exchange for three second-round draft picks. Philadelphia is 8-2 ATS in the past 10 meetings.
Philadelphia snapped a nine-game road losing streak Thursday behind 28 points and 14 rebounds from Tobias Harris. Simmons (back) missed his sixth in a row, Embiid (shoulder) his fourth straight and fellow starter Josh Richardson (concussion) his second consecutive. There’s a chance Richardson plays in this one. Al Horford had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists including a +41 rating, while former G-League player Shake Milton had 20 points. This will conclude a four-game road trip for the Sixers, who return home to host the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, where they are 28-2.
This season the Warriors have used 33 different starting lineups, the franchise’s most since a record 49 in 2009-10. They lost their 10th home game in a row Thursday to Toronto, but the energy was electric with Curry playing for the first time since late October. Wiggins, playing alongside Curry for the first time, had 21 points and nine rebounds. Draymond Green hasn’t played since Feb. 27 due to a sore knee and is questionable for Saturday. Golden State was facing the Raptors for the first time since losing Game 6 of the NBA Finals last season and Curry was the only Warriors player to take the court on Thursday from the team that lost that series. Golden State will host the L.A. Clippers on Tuesday.
Neither team is looking too good at this point, but the Sixers do have a little more depth and Curry is still on a minutes restriction. He was also a little rusty the other night. Philly finally won a road game the other night and have a little momentum.
