We are almost two weeks into the 2019-20 NBA season and only one team remains unbeaten. That team – the Philadelphia 76ers – will look to make it six straight to open the season when they visit the Phoenix Suns on Monday night. The Sixers started off their four-game road trip without big man Joel Embiid, who was suspended for two games for his role in a fight with Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns on Wednesday. Instead, he watched his team recover from a 21-point second-half deficit and knock off Portland 129-128 on Saturday on Furkan Korkmaz’s game-winning 3-pointer. The Suns are coming off a successful two-game road trip in which they beat both Memphis and Golden State and have covered the spread in all six of their games thus far. The Suns won seven road games a year ago and are already 2-1 with a close overtime loss at Denver in their second game of the season. Philly swept both games last year by five points in each and have won six of the last eight meetings.
Point guard Ben Simmons picked up some of the scoring with Embiid out by recording 18 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday for his first points-rebounds double-double of the season. Philadelphia acquired veteran Al Horford during the offseason to play alongside Embiid, but moved him back to center on Saturday. Horford notched a team-best 25 points on 12-of-24 shooting to go with seven assists, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. The bench did a terrific job with three players scoring nine points or more led by Mike Scott (12 points) and Korkmaz (11), while center Kyle O’Quinn chipped in nine points, seven boards, and five assists. The Sixers will finish up the road trip with visits to Utah and Denver next.
Fourth-year shooting guard Devin Booker is finally getting a bit of a supporting cast around him but still leads the way with 23.8 points a game, down from his 26.6 a year ago. Center Aaron Baynes is averaging 22 points over the last two games and knocked down a career-high four 3-pointers on Saturday while filling in for the suspended Deandre Ayton. Small forward Mikal Bridges, in his second season out of Villanova, reached double figures for the first time this season with 10 points in Saturday’s 114-105 win at Memphis. Monday marks the start of a long six-game homestand for Phoenix, who will also see the Lakers and Celtics next week.
Even without Embiid, this Philadelphia team is still better than Phoenix, although I do like this Suns team. Phoenix is a perfect 6-0 ATS this season, but the Sixers are a pretty solid 3-1-1 and are 3-0 SU away from home. Philly wins a close one here.
