The Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers have had some epic games over the years, but both are in an extreme rebuilding process that could take them to those heights again very soon. The 76ers’ ‘Process’ has taken longer than expected, but is starting to show progress as they go for the Staples Center sweep after knocking-off the Clippers 109-105 on Monday. Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 32 points and 16 rebounds, while Ben Simmons chipped-in 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Lakers have some quality young talent as well and managed to snap a three-game losing streak with a 100-93 victory at Phoenix on Monday to salvage the finale of a four-game road trip. The teams split a pair of meetings last season, with the road team winning each time. If this game comes down to long-distance shooting, the 76ers have the edge, ranking fifth in the NBA at 38.8%, while the Lakers are dead last at 30.2%.

Overshadowed by the young stars Embiid and Simmons, is fifth-year veteran Robert Covington, who is having the best season of his career so far. Covington nailed 5-of-8 3-pointers and all four of his shots inside the arc while scoring a career-high 31 points in the win over the Clippers. He entered Tuesday’s action tied for fifth in the NBA in 3-point percentage (50.0) and ranked third in made-3’s per game (3.7). Point guard Jerryd Bayless (wrist) missed his fourth straight game the other night and is doubtful for Wednesday. Philly will head home after this contest and play nine of their next 10 at Wells Fargo Center.

The starters failed to show up on Monday, but the reserves picked-up the slack in the win at Phoenix. The starting five scored just 54 points on 36.4% shooting, but did manage to drain nine three-pointers in 23 attempts. Jordan Clarkson led the charge off the bench, scoring a season-high 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Clarkson is hitting 51.2% of his shots and leads the team with a 15.5 points a game despite only playing just over 21 minutes a contest. Veteran Corey Brewer also provided a spark off the bench, scoring 13 points after being held to five or fewer in each of his first 13 games. Forward Brandon Ingram is averaging eight points – nearly six below his season average – on 7-of-27 shooting over a three-game stretch.
THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL PREVIEW AND FREE PICK
In a few years, this could be an NBA Finals matchup the way these clubs are rising, but they have a lot of work to do. The Sixers have the better squad, but they’re ending a long road trip and may be a little fatigued. I’ll take the home dog in this one.
