Brock Purdy’s career as an NFL quarterback is off to a great start with home wins over the Miami Dolphins and Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, he’ll get his first test in a hostile environment, as the San Francisco 49ers visit the Seattle Seahawks to kick off Week 15 action on Thursday night. Purdy should be ready to go after suffering oblique and rib injuries in a 35-7 victory against Tampa Bay on Sunday. This is the second meeting between these teams and the Niners can clinch the NFC West title with a win on Thursday. San Francisco throttled the Seahawks 27-7 in Week 2 behind Jimmy Garoppolo, who was subbing for the injured Trey Lance. Garoppolo threw a TD pass and rushed for one, while Geno Smith went 24-for-30 for 198 yards and an interception for the Seahawks. The home team is 4-1 against the spread in the past five meetings.

Seattle had a two-game lead in this division not too long ago, but with San Francisco’s 6-game winning streak and the Seahawks’ poor play, the 49ers have taken over. Seattle has lost three of four including a 30-24 home loss to the Carolina Panthers last week that really wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. The Panthers had the ball almost twice as long as Seattle and outgained the Seahawks by 177 yards, while compiling 223 yards on the ground. Smith, who is a leading contender for the league’s comeback player of the year, threw a season-worst two interceptions. Running backs Kenneth Walker III and DeeJay Dallas both missed the game with ankle injuries. Walker was limited in practice this week, as was Dallas and safety Joey Blount (back).

San Fran head coach Kyle Shanahan made swiss cheese out of Tampa Bay’s defense last week behind Purdy, who was the very last draft pick in his class. Brady had never lost to a QB making his first start, but Purdy was much better, completing 16-of-21 for 185 yards and two scores. Purdy became the first rookie in the Super Bowl era to throw at least two TD passes, run for a score and have a passer rating of at least 125 in his first career start. He won’t have star receiver Deebo Samuel, who is out a few weeks with a high ankle sprain. Christian McCaffrey had a rushing and receiving touchdown in the win. The defense ranks No. 1 in yards allowed (286.8), rushing (75.1) and scoring (15.2). The 49ers are 6-0 against the spread in their last six games against NFC West division teams.

Seattle doesn’t look like the same team that was ruling the division for the first half of the season. You can’t be in the thick of the playoff race and lose at home to the Panthers. The defense ranks 28th in yards allowed, 31st in rushing defense and 30th in points allowed per game at 25.7. Wideout DK Metcalf has 72 receptions for 869 yards and six touchdowns this season and can become the fifth player since 1970 to record at least 900 receiving yards and five TD receptions in each of his first four seasons. With a touchdown catch on Thursday, Tyler Lockett can become the first player since Davante Adams in 2020 with a touchdown catch in seven consecutive games. Seattle is 4-1 ATS in its past five vs. teams with a winning record and 8-2-1 against the spread in their last 11 home games versus San Francisco.

These teams are obviously going in opposite directions and this might be it for Seattle. Their defense can’t stop anyone right now and Purdy should have success. Defensively, the 49ers are a brick wall and defense travels in this league. I think the Niners roll once again.
