The last and only time the New York Yankees and New York Mets played each other in the World Series was 2000. The Yankees won that in five games and are well on pace to get back to the Fall Classic in 2022. Their opponent in late October could very well be the Mets, who are currently holding off the red-hot Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The Yankees lead the AL East by 12.5 games and are percentage points behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors. The Bronx Bombers started the second half of the season by losing a double-header in Houston before taking two of three at the Baltimore Orioles. Aaron Judge, who was named AL Player of the Week, and Anthony Rizzo have combined for 59 homers and 138 RBI on the season.

The Mets offense isn’t as potent, but they did score an 8-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday Night Baseball to avoid a three-game sweep. Pete Alonso’s go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference and assured the Mets of being in first place by the time they take on the Yankees. Alonso and Starling Marte have combined for 34 homers and 123 RBI this year. The Mets took four of six meetings in 2021 and are 5-2 in the last seven encounters. The Over is 7-1-1 in the last 9 matchups.
Pitchers: Yankees – Jordan Montgomery (3-2, 3.24) | Mets – Taijuan Walker (7-2, 2.55)
Montgomery pitched the first game out of the All-Star Break and didn’t factor into the decision after surrendering two runs in 6 1/3 innings in the 3-2 loss to the Astros. The lefty has allowed three runs or less in four consecutive starts and has a 3.15 ERA in 10 road starts, although, the Yanks are just 3-7 in those games. Montgomery is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA in three starts against the Mets.
Walker lasted pitched on July 16 and limited the Cubs to one run and four hits over six innings but received a no-decision. It was his seventh-straight start of allowing three runs or fewer. Walker is 1-3 with a 4.06 ERA in six career starts against the Yankees.
I’m going with the Mets in this one. They have won five of seven against the Yankees and Walker has been terrific at home. On the season, Walker is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in six home starts with no homers allowed in 36 innings.
