The New York Yankees gave former Cy Young winner Corey Kluber one of his worst outings of the season on Thursday and will look to continue hitting the ball out of the park when they play the second of four against the Cleveland Indians Friday. New York smashed three more long balls – two by Brett Gardner – in Thursday’s victory and boast 26 so far this month to increase their season total to 157 – 26 more than any other team in the majors. Didi Gregorius hit only his second home run in the last 26 games after starting the season off with 14 in his first 61. He also extended his hitting streak to seven games. New York OF Aaron Judge has hit safely in seven straight as well but is homerless in his past six games. The Indians have seen their big lead in the AL Central trim to 7.5 games after dropping five of their last six and allowed 37 runs during that stretch. Jose Ramirez blasted his 28th homer in the series opener for Cleveland to tie Boston’s J.D. Martinez for the major-league lead. Shortstop Francisco Lindor has 25 homers, which is the most at his position in the first half since Alex Rodriguez hit 27 in 2002.
Pitchers: Yankees – Domingo German (2-4, 5.06 ERA) | Indians – Shane Bieber (4-1, 3.47)
Domingo German has shaken-off a very poor start (0-4, 5.44) with four quality starts in his last six outings. In his last seven, he is 2-0 with a 4.59 ERA. German limited Toronto to one run on four hits and two walks over six innings with five strikeouts Sunday but came away with a no-decision. He struck out nine over six hitless innings May 6th against the Indians in a 7-4 Yankees win.
Rookie Shane Bieber will get another start for the Tribe after allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings in a 6-0 setback against Oakland on Sunday. It was Bieber’s first setback after winning four consecutive starts before that outing, allowing six runs on 29 hits over 24.2 innings with 23 strikeouts. He is 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA in his first three big-league starts at home.
The Indians are starting to struggle right now and the Yankees are bombing the ball all over the place. I see New York getting into the poor Cleveland bullpen early and cruising to victory.
