The New York Yankees begin a 7-game West Coast road trip with four games in Oakland starting tonight. They will then travel up to Seattle for the last three. The Yanks had lost 10 of 11 games and briefly fell out of first place before sweeping the Royals at home. They now sit a game and a half ahead of Tampa Bay in the American League East. Pitching was a major issue during their losing streak, but they seemed to have figured things out against a very good hitting Kansas City team. The Royals only scored 4 runs in the three-game series while the Yankees scored 23. Tonight’s starter C.C. Sabathia needs to turn things around quickly if he wants to help the Yankees compete this year. In 9 starts he is 2-6 with a 5.47 ERA and was shelled by Texas over the weekend (6 runs in 2.1 innings). He previous start was masterful at Kansas City where he allowed only 1 run in 7 innings to get the win. The last time he pitched in Oakland was June 11th, 2013 and he was hit for 6 runs in 6 innings including two home runs. The Oakland A’s are a bit of a mystery this year. Statistically, they appear to be a .500 team, but record wise they are the worst in the American League and 2nd worst in the majors behind only Milwaukee. They can go through stretches were they have trouble scoring runs and then out of nowhere they start hitting again. During a recent 3-game winning streak they outscored their opponents 16-2, but have since lost their last two games and only scored twice. Their top 4 starting pitchers have ERA’s that range from 1.77 to 3.69, but their combined records are 10-14 which proves a lack of run support. Kendall Graveman will be making his 6th start tonight and he has been dreadful. He is 2-2 with a 6.04 ERA and his strikeout/walk ratio is 13:11. He did impress in his last outing in Tampa Bay shutting out the Rays for 6 innings. This will be his first start against the Yankees. The Yankees seemed to have turned things around against Kansas City and their left-handed heavy lineup might be too much for Graveman tonight. Pick: Yankees -110 |
