The Washington Wizards are the only team in the NBA’s Eastern Conference to remain unbeaten thus far and can make it 4-0 for the first time in 39 years when they visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. Washington began their current four-game West Coast swing with a 109-104 win at Denver on Monday night, getting 83 of those points from their starting five. Bradley Beal scored a team-high 20 points and center Marcin Gortat had 13 on 6-of-7 shooting to improve his field-goal percentage for the season to 68%. Gortat has been in a Twitter battle with trash talk from Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball’s father, LaVar, claiming that Wizards point guard John Wall “will torture” him. Ball was just 3-of-13 from the floor but handed out 13 assists and grabbed eight rebounds in Sunday’s 119-112 home loss to New Orleans.

Wall’s scoring may not be as a high as he’s used to, but his assist total is on the rise, and got 12 against just two turnovers in the win over the Nuggets. Beal has at least 20 points in all three games despite a dismal 3-of-12 from 3-point range, while forward Otto Porter Jr. is averaging nine rebounds 3.7 steals to go along with 18.3 points. Washington outscored the Lakers 37-13 in the fourth quarter last March to cap a comeback win, giving them a franchise-record five-game road winning streak against Los Angeles.

Ball was one of four starters who failed to score in double figures in the loss to the Pelicans, as backups Jordan Clarkson (24 points) and Kyle Kuzma (20) led the way. Four-year veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made is Lakers debut after sitting the first two games due to a suspension, and had 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The Lakers on Tuesday announced that they have exercised team options on forwards Brandon Ingram and Larry Nance Jr., who are averaging a combined 26 points this season.
The Lakers, like the Sixers, will go through some growing pains this season, but have a bright future. Ball is going to have a tough time with the Washington guards in this one, but I think the Lakers will be able to keep this one close at home. I’ll take the points.
