The Virginia Cavaliers suffered a rare and unexpected loss over the weekend, but it didn’t hurt them in the overall scheme of things as they are not only the No. 1 team in the latest AP Poll for the first time since 1982, they are No. 1 overall in the selection committee’s minds as well. Virginia will try and rebound from that home loss to rival Virginia Tech when they visit the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday night in Coral Gables. Miami is also coming off an upset loss when they couldn’t hold a late second half lead in a 72-70 setback at Boston College on Saturday. Miami, who was missing coach Jim Larranaga due to illness, went scoreless in the final 6:17 and BC’s Ky Bowman nailed a pair of free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining to give the Eagles the win. Virginia was able to rally from a seven-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but Virginia Tech’s Kenny Blackshear Jr. scored on a putback with 5.8 seconds left to snap Virginia’s 15-game winning streak and 16-game home winning streak. Virginia is looking to avenge a 54-48 overtime loss at home to Miami last season and trails the all-time series 12-9.

The Cavaliers’ top-ranked defense, which has yet to allow an ACC opponent more than 64 points in a game this season, was not the issue against Virginia Tech. The poor shooting that usually rears its ugly head in the NCAA Tournament, shot a season-low 34.4% from the field (21-for-61) and 28.9% from 3-point land (11-for-38). Leading scorer Kyle Guy (15.3 points per game) had an especially tough night, shooting 5-of-21 from the field and 3-of-14 from beyond the arc, and will need a bounce-back performance against a pretty good Miami defense.

Virginia has covered the spread in 5 of the last 7 meetings.

Miami will be looking to rebound from a poor defensive outing on Saturday, when the Hurricanes gave up a season-high 43 first-half points and allowed an opponent to shoot 50% or higher for just the fifth time in 2017-18. On the season, Miami is allowing just 66.6 points per game, good for fifth in the ACC. Offensively, freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV had an eight-game double-digit scoring streak snapped against the Eagles, but is still averaging 16.7 points per game over his last nine games and is the Hurricanes’ top shooting threat. Miami will again be without second-leading scorer Bruce Brown Jr. after the starting guard had surgery for a foot injury on Thursday. He also leads the team in rebounds, steals and assists.

Miami is going to need all the offense it can muster when they go up against an angry Virginia team. Without Brown in the lineup, I just don’t see that happening. The Cavaliers will bounce back offensively in this one and play their usual stout defense.
