The Villanova Wildcats are back atop the polls once again, but almost suffered a humiliating loss last time out. They will seek a better effort this time around when they travel to the Nation’s Capital to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. Villanova slipped past St. John’s 78-71 on Saturday – the only winless team in the Big East. The Wildcats bounced back from losing their previous road game at Butler – 101-93 – and are in a scheduling stretch that seems them play five road games out of seven. Georgetown and first-year coach Patrick Ewing are off to a slow start in Big East play after going 10-1 in non-conference action. The Hoyas have lost four of their last six games and have dropped six consecutive matchups with the Wildcats entering Wednesday’s contest. Villanova routed the Hoyas 81-55 last season, holding Georgetown to just 36.2% shooting.

The Wildcats don’t really have the depth to go to their bench when in trouble, but the two reserves stepped up on Saturday against St. John’s when the starters combined for 14-of-40 shooting. Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree made both of his shots off the bench, but the real star was Donte DiVincenzo, who scored a game-high 25 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Big East Player of the Year candidate Jalen Brunson matched a season low with 12 points and committed three turnovers for only the second time all year. Guard Mikal Bridges had his first career double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) versus St. John’s, but was just 3-of-10 from the field and 1-for-6 from long range.

The Hoyas shooting woes continued when they hit just 36.4% percent from the floor and committed 16 turnovers in a 74-61 road loss to Seton Hall on Saturday, although Marcus Derrickson provided a bright spot with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jessie Govan struggled to 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting but blocked three shots – matching his total from the previous six games. Govan (17.6 points) and Derrickson (14.9) are the team’s top two scorers, while Kaleb Johnson contributes 10.0 points and scored 14 versus Seton Hall – his highest total in more than a month. Govan, who is shooting 51.9% from the field, has made 38% of his shots or worse in five of the last seven games.
NCAA BASKETBALL SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS
This team is no match for Villanova, but its a road game and we saw what the Wildcats did at St. John’s over the weekend. The Hoyas are still finding their way under Ewing, but this will be their biggest home contest of the season, and I think they keep it relatively close.
