Two teams who are looking for some more consistency meet Friday night when the Oklahoma City Thunder host the Minnesota Timberwolves at Chesapeake Energy Arena, broadcast live on NBA TV. The Thunder will begin a three-game homestand on Friday and are coming off another bad loss on Wednesday when they collapsed in the second half in Orlando. Oklahoma City has just one win in its last six games – a statement victory over the defending champion Golden State Warriors – and saw its offense hit a wall while the Magic used a 26-3 run in the second half on Wednesday to turn a close game into a 121-108 win. The Timberwolves have traded wins and losses over the last six games, and they followed up a 92-89 loss at home to Washington on Tuesday with a 120-102 road victory the next night at New Orleans. Minnesota has taken the first two this season by a combined seven points. Oklahoma City has lost an eye-popping 12 games this season when favored.

Minnesota’s offense comes and goes based on the play of guard Jimmy Butler, who scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting on Wednesday after going 5-of-17 from the floor in Tuesday’s loss to the Wizards. Butler is shooting 45.8% from the field in wins and 41% in losses, a trait he shares with center Karl-Anthony Towns (54.5% in wins, 50% in losses), who averaged 30 points and 15.5 rebounds in two wins over Oklahoma City in October. Center Gorgui Dieng scored 19 points on Wednesday after recording 17 total in his previous four games. With Portland’s loss last night, the Timberwolves are now tied atop the Northwest Division.

Reigning MVP Russell Westbrook is still working with newcomers Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to find a consistent rhythm that allows the team to be successful. Westbrook was a triple-double threat each night last season, but has taken a lesser role to get George and Anthony involved. Westbrook totaled 37 points and 11 rebounds in his fifth straight game with at least a double-double on Wednesday but committed seven turnovers and went for an x-ray after the game on a bruised left hand that came back negative. George scored 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting Wednesday after managing two points on 1-of-12 from the floor in a loss at Dallas on Saturday.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK PICKS
It’s a safe bet this year that when Oklahoma City is favored in a game, go against them. I’m not going as far to make Minnesota a moneyline play, but I will take the points with this up-and-coming young squad.
