Winnipeg, Manitoba

Opening Odds: Winnipeg -2.5/47
As I predicted last week, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers finally earned their first victory of the season when they took out the Ottawa RedBlacks 25-16. Winnipeg will look to make it two in a row when they host the Calgary Stampeders this Friday night in a Week 6 clash. Calgary dropped to 0-2 on the road last week with a 30-26 setback at the Montreal Alouettes, although they covered the spread for the third time in four games this season. The Bombers come into Friday’s contest as a 5-point favorite with a total pegged at 47.5.
This will be the second meeting between these CFL West rivals in three weeks. The Stampeders earned a 22-19 victory as 3.5-point home underdogs on June 24, ending a six-game losing streak to the Bombers. The Stamps have not won at Winnipeg since a 29-10 triumph way back in 2017. Overall, Winnipeg has won nine of the last 11 matchups but are just 6-5 ATS in that span and 4-4 ATS in the last eight at home versus Calgary.
CALGARY STAMPEDERS
The Stampeders were outgained by almost 200 yards last week in the loss to Montreal, but the Als three turnovers kept Calgary in it. Jake Maier threw for just 106 yards, but the ground game got going with 148 yards, including 65 from Peyton Logan, who is filling in for the injured Dedrick Mills and BJ Emmons. The defense has been bad, allowing over 30 points in five of their last nine games dating back to last season. The defense ranks dead last in yards allowed per game and second to last in offensive yards per contest.
WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS
Quarterback Zach Collaros was out of action last week due to an injury and kicker Sergio Castillo picked up the slack with six field goals in the win over Ottawa. Chris Streveler subbed and threw for just 127 yards on a night where the Bombers produced just 306 total yards. Collaros is expected back this week and will look to put his early season struggles behind him. The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player has zero touchdown passes and four interceptions in his first four games this season.
Prediction:
Hopefully the week off will help Collaros get back on track. He’s too good of a QB to be held in check for too long. Despite Winnipeg’s early season struggles, they should have no problem with this Calgary team. The Stamps are not very good on either side of the ball and have not won a road game since last October.
