The San Diego State Aztecs have already clinched one goal for the season and are going after even more as the regular season winds down. The Aztecs will visit a place that has given them troubles of late when they take on the Boise State Broncos on Sunday afternoon. With still two weeks left in the season, San Diego State has clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season title and are the only unbeaten team in the country at 25-0. Boise State is a distant second place in the conference, but have beaten the Aztecs three years in a row at ExtraMile Arena in the Gem State and are 12-1 there this season. Aztecs’ junior forward Matt Mitchell recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds in Tuesday’s 82-59 victory over New Mexico, but are still ranked fourth in the country despite their perfect mark. Malachi Flynn scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting against Boise State on Jan. 11, when the Aztecs raced to a 23-point lead at the half and cruised to an 83-65 victory at home. San Diego State is 5-1 ATS versus the Broncos in the last six games.

Flynn, who is a transfer from Washington State, is averaging 17.6 points, five rebounds and five assists over his past 10 games and is the likely MWC Player of the Year. Forward Yanni Wetzell was one of four double-digit scorers in the win over New Mexico with 20 points and is averaging 14.1 points and 7.1 rebounds while shooting 64.4 percent from the field over his last 10 games. Guard Jordan Schakel scored 11 points on Tuesday including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc where he is connecting on 43.9 percent for the season. San Diego State has one of the best defenses in the country. They are fourth in points allowed (58.4), seventh in defensive field goal percentage (37.6) and second at defending the three-pointer (27.8 percent).

Boise State was manhandled by the Aztecs last month in San Diego, but are a different team at home where they own a 122-29 record under head coach Leon Rice. Guard Justinian Jessup led the team with 18 points in Tuesday’s 74-57 victory over Air Force, while forward RJ Williams recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Derrick Alston was the only other double-digit scorer with 15 points as the Broncos held the Falcons to just 41.7 percent shooting and 6-of-24 from 3-point territory. Boise State will be at San Jose State on Wednesday.

The Aztecs have the conference wrapped up, but they would still love to finish a perfect season and claim a No. 1 seed in next month’s NCAA Tournament. I can see Boise keeping it close in the first half, but the Aztecs’ defense will take over after halftime.
