Both the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks were in a neck-and-neck sprint to October in the NL West race with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the two have fallen on hard times lately and at the worst possible time. One of these clubs could take a big step forward this weekend when Colorado travels to Phoenix to being a pivotal three-game set on Friday. The suddenly reeling Rockies have dropped five of six heading into the final portion of their nine-game road trip after getting swept in Los Angeles to fall 2.5 games behind the National League West-leading Dodgers and 1.5 in back of St. Louis for the final wild-card spot. Charlie Blackmon has done all he can, hitting .390 with four homers, eight RBIs and nine runs scored during his 12-game hitting streak, and he is 21-for-60 with five homers and 14 RBIs against Arizona this season. The Diamondbacks snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-0 triumph over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday to move within five games of the Cardinals for the final wild-card spot. Arizona is just 5-13 in the month of September and will turn to ace Zack Greinke on Friday against Rockies hurler German Marquez.

Marquez has hurled 10 consecutive quality starts after allowing three runs in six innings of a 3-0 loss at San Francisco on Saturday. Marquez is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA in five outings against Arizona this season, highlighted by an 11-strikeout performance in a 13-2 win 11 days ago. Arizona’s top hitters have give Marquez trouble in the past including A.J. Pollock (9-for-16), David Peralta (11-for-26) and Paul Goldschmidt (10-for-23).
Greinke has been perfect in four starts against the Rockies this season, going 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA and is seeking to reach the 15-win plateau for the eighth time in his career. He has not been his sharpest lately though, going 2-5 in his last nine starts after allowing four runs on eight hits in a 5-4 setback at Houston.
These teams are pretty even and are slumping a bit now, so I’ll turn to the pitching matchup here. Although Greinke has been struggling, he has good numbers against Colorado and I trust him more in this playoff-type game than I do Marquez. You won’t get Greinke at home at this price too often, so take it.
