The season series between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks is almost half over, and all seven meetings have been held at Coors Field. The D’Backs finally get a crack at Colorado in their ballpark starting Tuesday when they open a three-game set with the Rockies at Chase Field. Arizona returns from a long 10-game East Coast trip in which they went 7-3 to get within two games of the second NL Wild Card spot. On Saturday, the Diamondbacks mashed five homers in a 10-3 triumph only to allow four blasts in the Nationals’ 15-5 rout on Sunday. Ketel Marte continues to lead the offense by batting .372 with six homers, seven RBIs and 14 runs scored during the 10-game road trip. The Rockies are coming off one of the wildest series in history and will begin a nine-game road swing against National League West rivals on Tuesday. Colorado outscored San Diego 48-44 to set a major-league record for the highest-scoring four-game series in modern history, but it could only salvage a split when they were unable to hold ninth inning leads in both setbacks. The series featured 131 hits – the most in any four-game series since 1922 – including 15 alone from leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon, who set another modern-day record for the most by any player in a four-game set. Blackmon, who was named NL Player of the Week on Monday, lifted his batting average 31 points to .336 in the San Diego series, finishing the four-game set 15-for-24 with four homers, 10 RBI and nine runs scored. Five of the team’s seven meetings this season have been decided by one run.
Pitchers: Rockies – Antonio Senzatela (5-5, 5.48 ERA) | Diamondbacks – Merrill Kelly (7-6, 3.73)
Antonio Senzatela has sandwiched three solid outings around two duds in his last five starts and will be facing Arizona for the second time this season. Senzatela followed up his worst outing of the season on May 23rd against Pittsburgh (eight runs, 3.1 innings) by allowing four runs total on 17 hits over 18 innings in his next three outings. In his latest one, the Chicago Cubs tagged him for eight runs and eight hits over four innings in a 10-1 loss on Wednesday. One of those solid outings came May 28th against Arizona, as Senzatela came away with a no-decision after allowing two runs on nine hits over six innings.

Merrill Kelly ended May by surrendering eight runs on 12 hits across 8.1 innings in road starts against San Diego and Colorado, but has started out the new month with momentum. Kelly is 3-0 in June with a 0.81 ERA after allowing three hits in 7.2 scoreless innings at Philadelphia last Wednesday. He had a career-best 10-strikeout performance in his last home start against the New York Mets on June 2nd. Kelly gave up four runs and seven hits in 6.2 innings in that loss to Colorado in May in what was his only career start against them.
The Colorado bats should come down to Earth a bit after that wild weekend at Coors. Kelly is one of the best up-and-coming pitchers in the league and he’s been terrific in his last three starts. The Rockies are just 15-19 away from home and hit just .222 on the road. I’ll take the D’Backs in this one.
