After a 3-12 start to the season, it looked as if the Colorado Rockies were headed for a long season. Two weeks later and the Rockies are one of the hottest teams in the league, winning nine of their last 11 to get within 3.5 games of the first place L.A. Dodgers in the NL West. Colorado continues their seven-game road trip with the middle game of a three-game set at the Atlanta Braves on Saturday after an 8-4 win in Friday’s opener, scoring four runs – including two homers – against Max Fried. Colorado has scored seven or more runs while collecting 10-plus hits three times in the past four games and are being led by the red-hot Trevor Story. The Rockies’ shortstop extended his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games on Friday, going 2-for-5 with a homer, a double and two runs scored for his sixth multi-hit game during the streak. Story is batting .369 with 12 homers, 26 RBIs and 26 runs scored in 24 career games against Atlanta. The Braves are just 3-7 in their last 10 games to fall 1.5 games behind the Phillies and Mets in the NL East. Atlanta’s bullpen is rearing its ugly head again, allowing five or more runs five times in the past seven games, while the offense is 4-for-41 with runners in scoring position in their past four games. Reliever Jesse Biddle gave up three runs in the eighth inning Friday, and has surrendered six runs (two earned) on five hits with eight walks over 2.2 innings in his last six appearances. Atlanta catcher Tyler Flowers led the offense Friday with two home runs – finishing 4-for-4 – raising his average to .378 with a 1.062 OPS in 13 games this season.
Pitchers: Rockies – Jon Gray (2-3, 2.78 ERA) | Braves – Mike Foltynewicz (Season Debut)
Jon Gray allowed eight runs over 12.2 innings in his first two starts, but brings some momentum into this contest. Gray has a 0.92 ERA over his last three outings, beating Philadelphia on Sunday by allowing two hits with four walks and five strikeouts in six shutout innings. He has had his way with Atlanta hitters, going 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in five career starts against them.

Foltynewicz pitched just two innings during spring training due to right elbow soreness and will make his season debut Saturday. Foltynewicz finished eighth in the NL Cy Young Award voting last season by compiling a 13-10 record and 2.85 ERA to go along with 202 strikeouts. He made four starts for Triple-A Gwinnett during his rehab assignment and posted a 6.11 ERA. Foltynewicz is 0-4 with a 4.11 ERA in eight career games (six starts) against the Rockies.
I’m going to go with the hot team in this one. The Braves are in a real funk, especially in the bullpen and I don’t expect Foltynewicz to be in top form quite yet. He was roughed up in his rehab assignment and hasn’t fared well versus the Rockies in his career (Braves are 0-6). Meanwhile, Gray has been dominant against the Braves and has allowed just two runs in his last three starts overall.
