Opening Odds: Houston -195/8.5
The Houston Astros were already one of the favorites to win the World Series this season – their second in three years – and they got considerably better at the trade deadline by acquiring All-Star pitcher Zack Greinke. They will show off their new prize for the first time Tuesday when Greinke and the Astros host the slumping Colorado Rockies in the opener of a two-game interleague series at Minute Maid Park. Backed by Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, the Astros starting staff boasts a 14-1 record and 1.79 ERA over the last 17 games with Houston losing only three times in that span. They have opened up a nine-game lead over Oakland in the NL West and are just percentage points behind the New York Yankees for the top spot in the American League. Meanwhile, the Rockies are trending in the opposite direction despite earning a series win for the first time in over a month by taking two of three at home versus the San Francisco Giants. Nolan Arenado mashed two home runs in Sunday’s 6-2 victory but the team remains 6.5 games behind the second wild card in the National League pending Monday night’s late action.
Pitchers: Rockies – German Marquez (10-5, 4.68 ERA) | Astros – Zack Greinke (10-4, 2.90)
German Marquez appears to be turning things around after three awful outings in which he allowed 21 runs in three starts covering 14.2 innings in losses to Houston, Arizona and San Francisco. He’s rebounded to post three consecutive quality starts against the Yankees, Reds and Dodgers by allowing just four runs total in 20 innings of work. He struck out 10 Dodgers and allowed two hits over six scoreless innings before exiting because of full body cramping last time out. Marquez is 7-0 with a 2.98 ERA in interleague play.

Greinke has pitched well over his last three starts but the Diamondbacks failed to give him enough run support, dropping all three games. He’s allowed two runs or less in five of his last six starts including last time out in which he surrendered two runs and two hits at Yankee Stadium in the 7-5 setback. He knows Colorado well and has started four games against them this year, posting a 1-1 mark and 3.12 ERA that included giving up five runs and a season-worst 11 hits in a loss on June 19th.
Houston isn’t going to lose many more games this season, so you have to start looking at runlines with this team. This runline is almost even money against a team that is really struggling in Colorado. Astros big here.
