Rick Porcello and two relievers cooled-off the Minnesota Twins offense on Monday in the opener of a three-game series, as the Boston Red Sox won for a season-high sixth time in a row. J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts each recorded two hits and an RBI in the 2-0 series-opening win after the Red Sox had scored seven runs or more in four consecutive games. The win improved Boston’s road record to 22-17 and kept them 5.5 games behind the first place New York Yankees in the AL East and a tie with Texas for the second wild card spot. The AL-best Twins have lost back-to-back games for the first time since June 4-5, but are still on pace to match or break the best 81-game start in franchise history (54-27 in 1970), needing seven wins in their next 10 games to do so. Jorge Polanco went 1-for-3 Monday and leads the American League with a .332 average, while reaching base safely in each of his last 31 games. Minnesota’s lead is still a comfortable 10 games over Cleveland in the AL Central and they are 23-12 at Target Field this season. Veterans David Price (Boston) and Michael Pineda (Minnesota) will take the mound in the middle game of the series Tuesday.

Price followed up three solid starts by getting tagged for six runs and five hits in just 1.1 innings against Texas last Thursday, but came away with a no-decision as the Red Sox rallied for a 7-6 win. He allowed three runs total in his previous three outings, going 2-0 while giving up 14 hits in 18.1 innings. Price is 10-4 with a 2.62 ERA in 18 career appearances (17 starts) versus the Twins.

Pineda has also pitched well of late, giving up three runs or less in each of his last six outings and just one run in his latest against Seattle. The former Mariner received a no-decision after allowing five hits over 5.2 innings last Thursday. Pineda is 5-5 with a 4.23 ERA in 12 career starts against Boston, but this will be his first as a member of the Twins.
The Twins ran into a tough Porcello last night, but they’ll have success against Price on Tuesday. Minnesota hits lefties very well and even though Price has good overall numbers against them, that was mostly when the Twins were bad. His last three outings against them have not gone as smoothly. He’s allowed 11 runs and 24 hits over 18.2 innings and the Red Sox have lost two of those. I’ll take the Twins to bounce back here.
