The Boston Red Sox will look to get back on track when they host the last-place Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night. Boston has dropped four in a row overall to see their lead over the Yankees slip to 2.5 games with a four-game series in New York looming later this week. Boston has been outscored 38-10 in the losing skid and managed just four runs while being swept in a three-game series at home by the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend. Eduardo Nunez, who hit .384 in his first 16 games with the Red Sox, is just 8-for-43 in the last 10 games, while Hanley Ramirez is one for his last 15. The Blue Jays haven’t been playing much better, dropping seven of its last nine games overall after losing two of three at home to the Twins over the weekend. There was a bright spot in Sunday’s 7-2 loss, however, as the pitching staff struck out 17 Minnesota batters. The Blue Jays allowed a total of 22 runs in the three games and will try to stop the bleeding with ace Marcus Stroman against Boston lefty Drew Pomeranz. Toronto is still hanging around in the chase for a Wild Card spot, but must turn it on right now to make up the six games they’re behind.

Pomeranz continues to rack-up the victories despite not going very deep into ball games. He last suffered a loss on June 11th and is 7-0 since then in 13 starts. He didn’t allow a run in either of his last two starts but totaled just 8.2 innings and has not completed seven innings since May 31st at the Chicago White Sox. Pomeranz nearly reached seven innings in a win over Toronto on July 19th, when he allowed an unearned run on three hits and a season high-tying five walks in 6.2 innings. In 25 starts this season, Pomeranz has not allowed a free pass in only two of them.

Stroman will look to bounce back from a rough outing at Tampa Bay on Wednesday, when he allowed five runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. That marked just the second time in 11 starts that he allowed more than three earned runs. Stroman was tagged for six runs and 11 hits in 4.2 innings at home by Boston way back in April, but was better at the Red Sox on July 17th when he did not allow an earned run over 6.2 innings.

Boston has bounced back from bad stretches all season and I think they break-out here tonight against Stroman. Pomeranz has been solid enough to keep the Blue Jays bats at bay. The Red Sox won’t be looking ahead to New York in this game.
