The Boston Red Sox look to keep rolling while at the same time, extend the Toronto Blue Jays misery when they meet on Wednesday night for the middle game of their three-game set. The Red Sox pounded out 15 hits en route to an 8-7 victory in the opener and extending their winning streak to four games overall. Mookie Betts is on fire for Boston after struggling in the first few weeks of the season, as he had a solo homer among three hits on Tuesday and is 12-for-22 with four extra-base hits over his last five games. Toronto is off to its worst 13-game start in club history (2-11) but at least it showed some life with the bats in Tuesday’s loss. Struggling right fielder Jose Bautista went 0-for-3 to drop his average to .128, but may get things going Wednesday against Rick Porcello, whom Bautista has hit hard (16-for-38 with four homers). Porcello is coming off a shaky performance versus the Tampa Bay Rays in which he allowed four home runs. Blue Jays CF Kevin Pillar is 10-for-25 with five doubles and a homer during his current six-game hitting streak. Red Sox 1B Mitch Moreland clubbed his major league-leading 10th double Tuesday.
Pitchers: Red Sox – Rick Porcello (1-1, 7.56 ERA) | Blue Jays – Francisco Liriano (0-1, 9.00)
Porcello lasted only 4.1 innings against the Rays last time out, snapping a streak of 20 straight regular season starts with at least six innings pitched. He allowed three earned runs in each of his first two starts prior to that, so the Cy Young winner is not off to a good start. Porcello is 3-5 with a 6.23 ERA in nine career games (eight starts) at the Rogers Centre.
Francisco Liriano rebounded from a terrible season debut in which he retired only one batter and gave up five runs. Liriano pitched 6.2 innings against Baltimore on Thursday, giving up only two runs on five hits while striking out 10 Orioles, lowering his ERA at home to 3.00 since joining the Blue Jays midway through 2016. Liriano has a 5.97 ERA in his career against the Red Sox.
