The New York Yankees couldn’t distance themselves from the Tampa Bay Rays prior to the All-Star Break, but they’ll get another chance this week when they begin a four-game series at Yankee Stadium on Monday night. New York split four games in St. Petersburg last weekend to hold a 6.5-game lead in the American League West heading into the break and the lead is down to six entering Monday’s action. The Yankees used strong pitching to take two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays and have received news that pitchers Luis Severino and Dellin Betances are cleared to begin throwing programs on Monday. The Yankees are third in the majors in runs per game (5.63) but haven’t scored more than four since an 8-4 win at Tampa Bay on July 5th. The Rays come in with the best ERA in the majors at 3.33 and will trot out struggling ace Blake Snell in the opener. Tampa was three outs away from the first combined perfect game in MLB history, but settled for the 4-1 win at Baltimore to take three of four from the last place Orioles. Rays first baseman Nate Lowe is 8-for-17 with three homers, seven RBI and six runs scored in his last four games.

Snell was given eight days rest around the All-Star Break in hopes of clearing his head and finding his 2018 Cy Young form. He last pitched on July 6th against the Yankees and had one of his better outings despite lasting only five innings. He allowed one run and five hits and has surrendered a home run in each of his last four starts. He was blasted at Yankee Stadium on June 19th in which he allowed six runs in two-thirds of an inning and will be making his fifth start of the season against New York.

The inconsistent James Paxton has thrown three solid outings over his last four turns including two-run ball at Tampa Bay on July 7th while striking out 11 and not issuing a walk. Paxton, who has a 3.26 ERA in eight starts at home, is facing Tampa Bay as a member of the Yankees for just the second time.
You can’t hold down the Yankees bats forever and this could be the game they break loose again. Snell can’t seem to get past the fifth inning recently and that includes a horrendous outing at Yankee Stadium just three weeks ago. Paxton has been more consistent than Snell over the past month and should be able to handle the Rays here.
