The Tampa Bay Rays are in a three-team battle for the two American League wild cards spots and will welcome back the ace of their staff when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night to begin a two-game interleague series. Blake Snell, who underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow after a July 21st start, will be back on the mound for the Rays Tuesday. Tampa Bay leads Cleveland by 1.5 games for the final playoff berth and trailed first-place Oakland by 1.5 entering Monday’s action. The Rays are currently 3-3 on their eight-game road trip and will play their next six at home after the trip against Boston and the New York Yankees before finishing at Toronto. Outfielder Austin Meadows has a hit in all 14 games this month while going 22-for-52 with seven home runs, 18 RBI and 16 runs scored. The Dodgers have already wrapped up its seventh straight National League West title but are battling the Houston Astros and Yankees for the best mark in the league and homefield advantage should they get back to the Fall Classic. The teams split a couple of blowout wins in St. Petersburg back in May.
Pitchers: Rays – Blake Snell (6-7, 4.28 ERA) | Dodgers – Ross Stripling (4-4, 3.40)
Snell, who is expected to pitch no more than three innings, had a rough season until shortly before the surgery when he started to heat up. The 2018 Cy Young winner allowed four runs over 22 innings in his last four starts including the Yankees twice. Snell has never faced the Dodgers.
Stripling is trying to lockdown the No. 4 spot in the postseason rotation and has been bouncing back and forth from the bullpen. He lasted three innings in each of his last two starts – both on the road – and allowed just one run total and five hits with no walks. Stripling, who is 2-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 14 starts this season, four scoreless innings in two relief outings against Tampa Bay in his career.
This is a pretty even matchup between the starters and bullpen. Neither pitcher is expected to go long and both bullpens are pretty decent. The deciding factor here is not only the homefield advantage, but quite simply, the Dodgers have a better lineup.
