You can always expect a terrific backcourt battle when the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors hook-up, but this game will be minus one of them as point guard John Wall will miss up to two months for Washington following knee surgery. The team announced the news on Tuesday and then went out and snapped Oklahoma City’s nine-game winning streak with a 102-96 inspired victory, limiting Thunder superstar Russell Westbrook to 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting just five days after he dropped 46 in a win over Washington at home. All-Star guard Bradley Beal did his best in Wall’s absence, scoring 21 points and matching a career high with nine assists. The Raptors All-Star backcourt of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry are playing well and combined for 38 points and 17 assists in a 109-104 win over Minnesota at home Tuesday night. The teams split two earlier meetings in Toronto with DeRozan averaging 29.5 points. Wall missed the game in which Washington won 107-96, as Beal came through with 38 points.

Toronto has won seven straight at Washington and it will once again, lead on DeRozan, who scored 19 of his 23 points after halftime to help the Raptors get past the T’Wolves on Tuesday. DeRozan, who is averaging 24.4 points on the season, hasn’t reached that figure in seven straight games thanks to poor 3-point shooting. He is shooting 34.3% over his last four games, including 2-of-12 from long ranger over the last two contests. Center Jonas Valanciunas has been helping out lately with four straight double-doubles while making 33-of-51 shots. Toronto is 19-4 at home and will return to Air Canada Centre to play four in a row after leaving Washington.

Otto Porter Jr. had a team-high 25 points in the Wizards win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday and Tomas Satoransky made his second straight start in place of Wall and played terrific defense on Westbrook. Satoransky contributed six assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block, although he did miss all four of his shot attempts. He and his teammates will be tasked with slowing down DeRozan on Thursday. Power forward Markieff Morris is averaging 20.3 points – nearly double his season average – over the last three games. Washington will hit the road for three games after this game and play in Orlando on Saturday.
Washington played well without Wall on Tuesday, but how long can they keep that up? The Raptors seem to have the Wizards number right now when playing in D.C., and I see the trend continuing tonight.
