The Toronto Raptors are ending a five-game road trip that saw their star guard – Kyle Lowry – break his thumb, but the team has stepped up to take two of three since. Toronto looks to cap-off a successful trip with another win on Saturday when they visit the Dallas Mavericks after a nice 114-106 win at Portland. The trip started off with an easy win in New Orleans (122-104) then a split in Staples Center – 113-104 over the Lakers before the offense stalled in a 98-88 setback to the Clippers. In Lowry’s abscence, the Raptors are getting solid performances from Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam and own the leagues best defense, holding opponents to just 40.5 percent shooting from the field overall. Dallas is returning from a long road trip of their own and are looking to break a two-game slid after falling 106-103 in Kristaps Porzingis’ return to Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks. Dallas beat Memphis to begin the three-game trip but lost at Boston 116-106 on Monday before falling again Thursday. The Raptors have dominated the series of late, winning seven of the past eight, but Dallas has covered the spread in each of the last four.
The Raptors are not only winning without Lowry, but didn’t have small forward OG Anunoby (eye) on the court either on Wednesday and is questionable for Saturday’s contest in Dallas. VanVleet picked-up the scoring slack with a season-high 30 points in Wednesday’s win and is averaging 22.3 points over the last three games. Siakam led everyone with 36 points and is averaging 27.2 points on the season, shattering last year’s career-high 16.9 points per game. The Raptors are just 14th in the league in field goal percentage (45.9), but are second in shooting the three-pointer (39.7) and free throws (84.2). Toronto returns home to face Charlotte on Monday.
Porzingis was booed loudly in his return to New York, but managed to record 20 points against his former team to go along with 11 rebounds, but it was the Luka Doncic show on Thursday. The star point guard recorded his fifth triple-double of the season with 33 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds and leads the Mavericks in just about every statistical category. Dallas has lost two of their last three and come home to American Airlines Center, where they are just 2-3 so far. Doncic’s backcourt mate Seth Curry is just 6-of-23 from the field over the last three games, but power forward Dwight Powell is shooting 62 percent from the floor after hitting 5-of-9 against the Knicks. Dallas will host San Antonio on Monday.
Toronto is playing better than Dallas, but the abscence of Lowry is going to start taking it’s toll. Dallas is much better than their 6-5 record and I expect them to open up their homestand with an easy win on Saturday.
