Jay Cutler will be back under center on Sunday to try and jumpstart the NFL’s worst offense as the Miami Dolphins host the Oakland Raiders on Sunday Night Football. Coach Adam Gase is not happy with what he’s seen from his offense after his team was shutout for the second time in five games last Thursday night in an embarrassing 40-0 loss at Baltimore. Cutler won’t have running back Jay Ajayi to hand the ball off to, as he was traded last week to Philadelphia for a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft. The rushing duties will fall on Kenyan Drake (25 yards) and third-down specialist Damien Williams (32 yards). A lack of a running game has hurt Derek Carr and the Raiders this season, especially in their 34-14 loss at Buffalo last week – their fifth setback in six games to fall into last place in the AFC West (tied with Chargers). This will be the first meeting between the Raiders and Dolphins in over three years, with Miami covering the spread in the last four matchups dating back to 2010.
Carr followed up his 417-yard performance in a 31-30 won over Kansas City with a 313-yard effort against Buffalo, but he also threw two picks for the third time in five games. Wideout Michael Crabtree saw his three-game touchdown streak end last week, while Amari Cooper’s breakout effort against the Chiefs (11 catches, 210 yards) was followed by a 48-yard performance last week. Reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack has been held in check of late, registering just a half-sack over his last four games. The Raiders are -6 in turnover differential this season after finishing the 2016 season at an NFL best-tying +16.

Cutler, who missed one game due to multiple cracked ribs, is expected back provided he has a high pain tolerance. Right now, he’s listed as probable for Sunday night’s contest. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry is now the main offensive weapon with Ajayi gone, and he ranks second in the league with 50 catches, but for just an eight-yard average. Fellow wideout DeVante Parker is set to return from a three-game absence due to an ankle injury which gives Cutler another solid option. Defensive end Cameron Wake has recorded a team-leading six sacks in his last seven games for a Miami defense that ranks seventh overall in the league. This will be the middle of three-straight prime time games for Miami, as they head to Carolina next Monday night.
Cuter’s return means nothing. Miami’s offense is still terrible and this is a great opportunity for Oakland to get back on track. Look for Carr to have another big game and for the Raiders defense to force a few key turnovers in the win tonight.
