The Philadelphia Phillies have used a 14-7 home record to catapult themselves to the top of the National League East standings, but they’ve put together back-to-back road wins to begin their six-game ‘Show Me State’ trip through Missouri. The Phillies came out flat in a 6-0 loss to start the trip at St. Louis, but bounced back by outscoring the Cardinals 16-1 in taking the next two. Up next are the Kansas City Royals, who have dropped five of their last seven and now own the American League’s worst record at 13-25. Cesar Hernandez homered in the Phillies’ 5-0 over St. Louis on Wednesday and is batting .357 with 11 extra-base hits (eight doubles, three homers) and 10 RBIs in his last 26 games. Philadelphia has won nine of its last 13 thanks to some solid starting pitching, with the hurlers posting a 2.42 ERA in that span. Former National League Cy Young Award recipient Jake Arrieta will oppose Kansas City’s Homer Bailey in the series opener Friday. Billy Hamilton had two of the three hits for the Royals in their 9-0 loss at Houston Wednesday, improving to 4-for-12 in the series after a 2-for-24 stretch. Kansas City, which begins interleague play on Friday, went 6-14 against the National League last season.
Pitchers: Phillies – Jake Arrieta (4-2, 3.40 ERA) | Royals – Homer Bailey (3-3, 5.25)
Arrieta will make his ninth start of the season but just his third away from home after splitting the first two and posting a 2.77 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 13 innings of work. He’s coming off a no-decision in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits against Washington. Arrieta has pitched at least six innings in seven of his eight starts in 2019 but has allowed three of his five home runs in the past four outings. He is 2-0 with a 3.70 ERA in four career starts against the Royals.

Bailey rebounded from a pair of poor outings to post an easy 15-3 win over the Detroit Tigers last Saturday. The righty allowed just two runs in six innings of work after surrendering four runs in each of his previous two starts. Bailey owns a 1-4 record with a 3.74 ERA in 11 career starts versus the Phillies – all as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
Bailey is in for a rough outing against a Phillies offense that comes in with some momentum. Outside of Zach Eflin, Arrieta has been the most consistent Philadelphia starter and should have no trouble with the Royals lineup.
