The Philadelphia Phillies are halfway through their six-game West Coast trip and will go into San Diego on Monday seeking their first win after dropping the first three. Philadelphia has seen their NL East lead shrink to just one game over the Atlanta Braves after the Phillies were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend – their four loss in a row overall. The Dodgers blanked Philadelphia 8-0 on Sunday and the Phillies will be getting some offensive help after acquiring slugger Jay Bruce (.212, 14 HR) from the Seattle Mariners. Bryce Harper’s bat is heating up despite going 0-for-4 on Sunday, as the star right fielder is 10-for-24 with two homers and nine RBI in his last six games. The Phillies will take on a struggling Padres squad that has allowed 46 runs while going 2-5 in their last seven games after a pair of 9-3 setbacks against the Miami Marlins over the weekend. The game on Sunday was delayed 28 minutes by a swarm of bees, but that didn’t bother Hunter Renfroe, who blasted two homers and is 4-for-9 with three dingers and four RBI in the past three games. Two struggling teammates include Manny Machado, who is hitless in his last 12 at-bats with six strikeouts and catcher Austin Hedges, who is in an 0-for-10 funk to drop his average to .187.
Pitchers: Phillies – Aaron Nola (6-0, 4.18 ERA) | Padres – Eric Lauer (4-4, 4.45)
Aaron Nola has an ERA of 4.18, but has been getting stronger as the weather warms up. He was 4-0 with a 2.73 ERA in May and the Phillies earned the victory in all six of his starts. Nola is seeking to win his eighth consecutive decision dating back to the end of the 2018 season and is coming off a victory over St. Louis last time out after allowing one run on four hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts. Nola won his start at Petco Park last season, holding the Padres scoreless for six innings in the 5-1 victory.

Eric Lauer has been on a roll since getting hammered in Colorado on May 10th, allowing one earned run in each of his last three starts and San Diego won all three. Lauer had gone six starts without a win before the last two and has a 2.67 ERA at home. Lauer, who will be facing the Phillies for the first time, has walked just 14 batters in 58.2 innings this season.
When the Phillies need a win to stop a skid, they turn to Nola, who has helped his team win all six games he started in May. Philly ran into the NL’s best over the weekend and should fare much better in this series, starting with the opener.
