The Philadelphia Phillies continue their nine-game road trip on Friday night looking for some offense and to snap a four-game losing streak. The Phillies’ bats won’t have it easy when they take on Sandy Alcantara and the Miami Marlins to begin a three-game weekend series before Monday’s All-Star Break. Philadelphia began the road trip with two shutout victories at the St. Louis Cardinals despite scoring only three total runs. After dropping the final two at Busch Stadium, the Phillies were swept in a two-game interleague set at the Toronto Blue Jays. The offense has produced just 12 runs in the last six games and find themselves a game behind the final NL wild card spot entering the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Marlins are only 2.5 games behind the Phillies in the standings and are coming off a four-game series split with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Miami dropped the first two in the series before winning the last two in extra innings including Wednesday’s 3-2 walk-off victory. Both teams went scoreless in the 10th inning until the Pirates plated a run in the 11th. Brian Anderson then ripped a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning to send the Marlins’ fans home happy. Miami holds a 4-3 edge over Philadelphia in the season series including taking three of four in the middle of April at loanDepot Park.

Pitchers: Phillies – Kyle Gibson (4-3, 4.53) | Marlins – Sandy Alcantara (9-3, 1.73)

Kyle Gibson gets his third crack at the Marlins this season and is coming off a brilliant outing at St. Louis. The right-hander shut the Cardinals out over seven innings, allowing just two hits and no walks. It was a much-needed bounce back effort from Gibson, who allowed 11 runs over 6 2/3 innings in his previous two starts. Gibson has a 6.50 ERA in three career starts versus Miami.

Alcantara makes his final start before heading to Los Angeles for Tuesday’s All-Star Game. The righty has been outstanding all season long and has not allowed a run over his last two starts. He helped the Marlins to a 2-0 over the New York Mets last Sunday, limiting them to six hits over seven innings. Alcantara has gone at least seven innings in each of his last 12 starts and is 1-0 in two outings against the Phillies this season with a 2.57 ERA.

I don’t see a lot of scoring in this one. Gibson was great against Miami the last time he faced them and the Marlins can’t hit. The Phillies haven’t scored more than three runs in a game since last week and are going up against the possible Cy Young winner this year. The Under is 7-1 in Philly’s last eight games.
