The Coronavirus is starting to have a small impact on the PGA Tour, but play keeps going and this week’s stop is the Motor City. The Rocket Mortgage Classic from Detroit is scheduled for July 4th Weekend and this week’s field is a little weaker than we’ve seen over the last month. Bryson DeChambeau will be the heavy betting favorite at +650 according to Bovada Sportsbook.
Last week’s Travelers Championship outside of Hartford had six players withdraw due to COVID-19. Former world No. 1 Brooks Koepka and four-time PGA Tour winner Graeme McDowell skipped because their caddies tested positive. Koepka’s brother Chase and Webb Simpson withdrew simply out of caution. None of those four players have tested positive as of now. Dustin Johnson went on to win the Travelers in another exciting finish to the PGA Tour.
Last weekend, Cameron Champ, Denny McCarthy and Dylan Frittelli all tested positive and will not play this week. Keep in mind, if a player withdraws before a tournament, all bets on him are returned, but not so if he withdraws during the tournament. The Rocket Mortgage Classic debuted last year and Nate Lashley – the last alternate in the field – went wire-to-wire for his first PGA Tour victory.
Detroit Golf Club’s North Course is a par 72 at 7,334 yards and once again, no fans will be in attendance. Simpson is the highest-ranked player in the field and is the second-betting choice +1100 followed by Tyrrell Hatton at +1200.
