The New England Patriots have taken full advantage of a rather easy schedule thus far and are threatening to run away with the AFC East once again. The Pats go for the season sweep of the rebuilding New York Jets this week on Monday Night Football in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The only team New England has beat with a winning record are the Buffalo Bills, but the Patriots will have some challenges upcoming in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City. The Jets are coming off a huge home win over Dallas last week and now have their starting QB back under center in hopes of handing New England their first loss. Sam Darnold missed the Week 3 encounter with mono, and third-stringer Luke Falk led the team to all of 105 total yards and zero third-down conversions. Both of the Jets’ scores were defensive touchdowns when the game was already out of hand, but that was enough to cover the large spread. Tom Brady threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns, while Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead each added a rushing touchdown. New York’s only win in the past 10 meetings was 26-20 in overtime at home in 2015. New England has covered only four of the past 10 in the series, while the under is 7-3 in that span.
New England was a 17-point home favorite last Thursday night against a Giants team missing its three best offensive players. The Patriots used a defense that forced four turnovers and scored along with a special teams touchdown in a 35-14 victory and cover. Brady didn’t throw for a score and had two turnovers but became the oldest player in league history with two rushing touchdowns and also passed Peyton Manning for No. 2 on the all-time passing yardage list. New England has now won 19 consecutive games against a first or second-year quarterback, the longest such streak in NFL history. New England ranks second to Carolina with 25 sacks and leads the league in points allowed (8.0) and total yards allowed (234.7) while limiting opponents to just 73.7 yards on the ground. The Patriots will host Baker Mayfield and the Browns next Sunday afternoon.
Darnold returned last week with 338 yards passing and two scores to give Jets’ head coach Adam Gase his first win. Le’Veon Bell had his first rushing touchdown as a Jet and the New York defense stopped Dallas on a two-point try with under a minute to go to seal the upset win. Top Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley and offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele missed the game due to injury. Left tackle Kelvin Beachum left with a sprained ankle. The Jets defense has allowed 24.6 points a game but a lot of that has to do with the inept offense giving the opposing team great field position.
The Jets seem to be the trendy pick here, but the Patriots are coming off extra rest and should have no trouble covering this number. This New England defense has been terrific and will force Darnold into mistakes that will prove to be the difference.
