The 2024 NFL preseason schedule wraps-up on Sunday night with a matchup between two teams with new coaches and new quarterbacks. The New England Patriots visit the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field on NBC and Peacock. Both the Commanders and Patriots are entering new eras with new head coaches – Dan Quinn and Jerod Mayo – and rookie quarterbacks in Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye. New England has been tabbed as a 6.5-point favorite in Sunday’s finale with a total pegged at 33.
This will be New England’s only road game this preseason. They have split their two home dates with a win over Carolina and loss to the Eagles. Conversely, Washington will be at home for the first time this preseason. They have dropped both of their road contests this August. A 20-17 loss to the New York Jets and 13-6 setback to the Miami Dolphins. The Commanders failed to cover the spread both times.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
New England used four quarterbacks last week in their 14-13 loss to Philadelphia. First round pick Drake Maye, veteran Jacoby Brissett, last year’s backup Bailey Zappe, and 2024 6th rounder Joe Milton III all took snaps. Maye looked a lot like Mac Jones from a year ago, going 6-for-11 for 47 yards for an average of 4.3 per pass. Maye did run for a 4-yard score in the second quarter. Running back Kevin Harris ran for 16 yards on a three carries, but the Pats averaged just 3.0 yards a carry overall. Linebacker Raekwon McMillan had a solid game with nine total tackles, including one for a loss.
WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
Washington announced earlier this week that it has named rookie Jayden Daniels the starting quarterback for Week 1 in two weeks. Daniels didn’t do much in Week 1 of the preseason against the New York Jets, but was 10-for-12 for 78 yards against Miami last week. That was enough for Quinn to name Daniels the man. Backup Jeff Driskel led the team in rushing with 45 yards – 41 of those yards came on one carry. Rookie wideout Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint caught two balls for 33 yards, while Michael Wily caught three for 31 yards.
This will be a very conservatively played game, as neither team wants to go into Week 1 with major injuries. New England’s offense has looked horrible, averaging just 216.5 yards a game this preseason. No way I can lay that many points with that offense. I’ll take the home dog.
