The San Diego Padres are in a stretch of 11 games away from home over 14 contests, but are playing themselves right back in the thick of a crowded NL Wild Card race. San Diego begins a five-game road trek against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday just two games back of Milwaukee after sweeping the Brewers at home earlier this week. The Padres held Milwaukee to one run in taking the first two then outslugged the Beweers 8-7 on Wednesday to complete the sweep. Franmil Reyes smacked a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning in that Wednesday contest to help get his team back over the .500 mark for the first time since the middle of April. The Padres struggled to contain Pittsburgh’s offense last month, giving up 21 runs and losing three of four at home to the Pirates. However, Pittsburgh has been in a tailspin since, losing 20 of 28 before erasing a six-run deficit on Wednesday to defeat the Detroit Tigers 8-7. The Pirates might be sellers by the trade deadline, as they are six games out of a playoff spot and have four teams between them and San Diego entering Friday’s action.

The Padres won four in a row during Eric Lauer’s starts before he got roughed up in the last two including that record-breaking series at Coors Field last weekend. The lefty gave up four runs – three earned – in losing at Washington on June 8th then was tagged for five runs on 10 hits in a season-low 2.2 innings at Colorado. He threw a season-high 105 pitches in a no-decision May 16th against the Pirates after allowing two runs in 5.2 innings.

Joe Musgrove will finally get to see a different opponent after his last three outings have all come against the Atlanta Braves. That is mostly due in part to getting ejected in the first inning of his start on June 10th before coming back three days later and allowing six runs on nine hits over four-plus innings. He earned the win against Atlanta on June 5th with eight innings of three-run ball, but was knocked around in the two starts prior to that. The Pirates are 2-0 against San Diego when Musgrove starts including a 6-4 victory at Petco Park on May 19th when he allowed four runs – three earned – over 6.1 innings.
This should be a pretty competitive series, but I lean Padres here because they’ve played much better recently than the Pirates. Pittsburgh has dropped nine of their last 12 and are slowly eliminating themselves from contention. Look for the Padres to knock around Musgrove.
