Opening Odds: San Diego -140/8.5

The San Diego Padres enter a nine-game road trip with just three wins in their last 11 games with all the victories coming at the MLB-best Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the All-Star Break. The Padres began the second half by getting swept at home by the Atlanta Braves and they’ll try to regroup against the NL-worst Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. The Marlins are the only team not within striking distance of an NL Wild Card berth and are just 16-31 at home this season. One bright spot for the team is tonight’s starter Jordan Yamamoto, who has been surprisingly dominant in his brief stint in the majors. The Padres are just three games out of a wild card spot and will send Logan Allen to the hill in hopes of breaking the team’s three-game losing streak. San Diego SS Fernando Tatis Jr. is coming off a four-hit performance on Sunday and is 9-for-17 in his last four games. The Marlins took two of three in San Diego back in early June by scoring nine runs in each of their two victories and were heavy underdogs in all three contests.

Pitchers: Padres – Logan Allen (2-1, 4.50 ERA) | Marlins – Jordan Yamamoto (3-0, 1.24)

Allen was hit hard by the San Francisco Giants in his last start July 1st after posting two solid outings to begin his career. The Giants tagged him for six runs and seven hits over four innings in the 13-2 setback. He pitched seven scoreless innings in his first start against Milwaukee then allowed just two runs in six innings at Baltimore. Allen pitched in relief on July 4th at the Dodgers, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning of work.

The Marlins took two of three from San Diego earlier this season.

Yamamoto has started five games to begin his career and three of them were scoreless outings including last time out at Atlanta. He held the Braves to just two hits while striking out seven but the Marlins lost the game 1-0. He does have 15 walks in 29 innings, but has yet to allow a home run.

I’m going to give the edge to Yamamoto and the Marlins in this one. He has been really tough to hit and the Padres are batting just .213 in their last 10 games and their bullpen has been bad. This is not the most attractive game of the night, but I really like Miami here.
