San Diego (46-51) at Chicago Cubs (53-44)
When: Saturday, July 20th, 2019
Where: Wrigley Field,
Chicago, Illinois
Time: 2:20 ET | TV: ABC 7,
FS San Diego
Opening Odds: Chicago -139
The San Diego Padres have played the good teams tough this season, going 25-18 against clubs over .500, but couldn’t make an early lead stand up on Friday, as they dropped the series opener at Wrigley Field 6-5 to the Chicago Cubs. The Padres got out to a 3-0 lead before starting Eric Lauer’s only bad inning was capped off by an Anthony Rizzo grand slam. I had the Padres as one of our top plays on Friday at +137 and they will be slight dogs again in Saturday’s contest with Joey Lucchesi facing fellow lefty Jose Quintana. The Cubs dropped eight of their final 12 games to end the first half, but have blasted out of the break by going 6-1 and are slowly opening up their lead in the crowded NL Central. The Padres are going in the opposite direction, dropping six of seven since beating the Dodgers in L.A. three straight times prior to the All-Star Break. Rizzo’s slam gave the first baseman a hit in 10 straight games, going 17-for-35 with nine RBI during that span, while Javier Baez smacked his team-leading 23rd homer. Manny Machado gave San Diego and early 3-0 lead with his 24th homer, while Eric Hosmer extended his hitting streak to five games with a pair of singles.
Pitchers: Padres – Joey Lucchesi (7-4, 3.92 ERA) | Cubs – Jose Quintana (7-7, 4.21)
Lucchesi has been pretty reliable for San Diego this season, but does have his struggles on the road. He is unbeaten in his last five outings with a 3.45 ERA, but is 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in seven road starts. Lucchesi limited the Atlanta Braves to two runs over five innings last Saturday but the Padres lost that contest 7-5. He has one career outing against the Cubs, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings in a no-decision last season.

Quintana has been on a bit of a roll lately, winning his last three starts, allowing six runs combined over 19 innings, after failing to record a victory in his previous nine outings. His last two starts came against Pittsburgh and he allowed three runs on six hits and two walks across six innings in the latest one last Sunday. Quintana is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts versus San Diego.
I really thought the Padres could steal the opener yesterday, but their struggles continued. Lucchesi has been pretty bad on the road and the Cubs have a lot of momentum right now. I’ll take the hot Quintana and Chicago in this one.
